Samuel Berney, the band is an unsigned solo artist from Rapid City, South Dakota.

He started violin lessons at four and learned to play the violin via the Suzuki program at age five.

He is involved in many classical musical groups, but decided to take a turn for the experimental. He started this solo project when he started taking guitar lessons, playing on the piano, and teaching himself music theory in 2007.

The band’s experimental instrumental lineup changes, but the usual bases are violin or electric violin, acoustic guitar, and vocals. The more recent tracks include electric-acoustic guitar, bass guitar, kazoo, harmonica, tambourine, and low whistle in addition to the melody line instruments.

The recording of the music is lo-fi. Samuel Berney, the band’s early tracks were recorded using an X-Fi Gaming Soundcard with a low-end stereo directional microphone, but slowly equipment improved to a dynamic microphone mixed with direct inputs into a bass amp, mic’d running to the soundcard. The premixed sound reduces the load on the sound card and the computer processor, letting audacity record with less lag.

Samuel Berney, the band’s music is free under the creative commons license. Some of the tracks that meet Last.fm’s encoding requirements are available for download on last.fm. Descriptions of instrumentation, stylistic traits, and influences for each track are here.
