Sammy Sadler was born in Tennessee and raised in Texas. He moved to Nashville shortly after high school and at age 21 he had six songs on the country music charts. One night Sammy was at the office of Cashbox Magazine editor Kevin Hughes. When they left the office a man stepped out of an alley and shot them both. This infamous incident became known as “The Murder on Music Row.” Kevin was killed that night in March of 1989. Sammy went through 18 hours of surgery in order to save his life. It took 2 1/2 years for him to get back on his feet. Sammy returned to Bonham, Texas and worked for his family’s sheetrocking business. After his recovery, he toured for a while up until 1997, when he decided to come off of the road— never knowing if the gunman was still lurking in the audience. The shooting was featured on “Unsolved Mysteries,” “Cold Case Files,” and “Nancy Grace.” However, the case was not solved until 2004— fourteen years later. The trial revealed that the shooter had been hired to murder Kevin Hughes the editor of Cashbox Magazine because Kevin would not participate in a chart fixing scheme with some Nashville publicists. Sammy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
After the trial Nashville began calling Sammy to return to country music. Sammy released “Hard On A Heart” later that year to test the waters. This song placed in the top 10 on the Texas Charts and went to No. 1 in Europe for seven weeks.
