  • How varied is my music taste?

    3 Mar 2009, 11:26 by mandraco

I'm doing this from something I found at Bri_82's journal.

'First, make a list of your overall top-20 artists. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, add up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.'

  • Letzter «Rat Pack»-Star Joey Bishop mit 89 Jahren gestorben

    19 Oct 2007, 11:09 by worCOhOLic

  • Debut of Unusual Animals Project Space in Indianapolis

    18 Oct 2007, 15:23 by puddlegum

When Unusual Animals first crawled onto land, it did so from a pool of oozing vinyl in the from of a limited print double side series featuring eclectic experiments by Asthmatic Kitty Records artists and friends. From there, the idea propagated into Unusual Animals Parties, live events with an Asthmatic Kitty artist highlighting local fringe musicians and businesses. Now, catalogers will have to change their genus-differentia of Unusual Animals to include art, with the evolution of this project into the Unusual Animals Project Space in Indianapolis, Indiana.

On October 31st, UA Project Space, Asthmatic Kitty Records, and Kangaroo Press present the official debut of the specialized gallery, along with live music by Castanets, newly announced Cryptacize, Deer Tick, and Bronze Float. The Harrison Center for the Arts, a gallery with studio space housing 23 artists and VSA Arts, is hosting the UA Project Space. Music will be in the Harrison Center Underground.

Because the Unusual Animals Project Space will promote installation art from aspiring and established artists alike, local and national, it will be the first of its kind in Indianapolis. Cindy Hinant, the Space’s first artist and co-curater with Michael Kaufmann, will present Cascades, a representation of Hinant’s personal mythology with nature. The environment will combines images from popular culture and childish shapes to describe the relationship she has with the natural world.

Castanets, touring on promotion of their third album due October 23, is Raymond Raposa alone, walking through the dark and crowded dance floor, singing bare voiced (rangy, high, cracked and real) with acoustic guitar. Castanets is a four-piece or a five-piece, six-piece, seven-piece, all-of-us-everywhere-piece stomping out electric tombstone chants or something that sounds like Pink Floyd with more heart. Castanets is delta heart, Nashville hands, outer space brain.

The newly signed Cryptacize began across the street from the C&H Sugar Factory in Crockett, CA, where Nedelle Torrisi and former Deerhoof-er Chris Cohen lived in a tilted apartment. Constant dizziness and the smell of burning sugar became a permanent part of their psyches, and this is their #1 influence. One morning while brushing their teeth, toothpaste running sideways out of their mouths, Nedelle pronounced the word ‘Cryptacize’ and the house appeared to incline in the opposite direction. Soon after this strange incident, they discovered something even stranger on youtube - a percussionist named Michael Carreira.

Deer Tick began as the songwriting project of John McCauley, a singer/songwriter based out of Providence, Rhode Island. In addition to his own musical endeavors, McCauley has also collaborated with notable contemporary musicians such as Viking Moses, Jana Hunter, Nat Baldwin, and Jason Anderson. McCauley takes his cues from legendary songwriters such as Townes Van Zant, Neil Young and Ritchie Valens, and big stage personalities like Sammy Davis Jr., and Tony Bennett.

Bronze Float is a music project of painter, David Brant, with a dwindling interest in his own painting, but a growing interest in art making. Bronze Float had a slow birth, but was real in 2007. This band continues to be supported by the following moonpie players: Justin Vollmar, Nathan Vollmar, Joe OConnell, Clinton Hughey, Peter Brant.

Doors open at 7pm on October 31st. Admission is $6.
