Finally it’s suddenly your turn, everything going on auto-pilot, you plug your instrument in, do a brief soundcheck to set levels, and then you take a deep breath… You start singing, you concentrate on making the songs as atmospheric and story-telling-like as possible and not some droney sound taht you usually do, you feel the atmosphere shift in the audience, then you start to get into the song, you feel like you’re riding an invisible wave of energy… suddenly everyone goes quiet…
you think wow, that’s a good sign, then like another undulating wave, people start talking a bit again, so you carry on trying not to forget the words or mess up your fingering on the uke…you realise the song is coming to an end so you show off a little bit vocally, you let the last note linger as long as you can…and then you’re back in the room, blinking and shaking…and then you hear the applause and the cheering… and you know it was worth the callouses, the sweats, the nervous ticks and the weak knees…you know it was worth losing sleep over, losing your voice, crying because noone would hold your hand. You know you had an audience…
