Biography

There are three artists listed on Last.fm under the name of Sagittarius.

1) The first is a 1960s studio group from the U.S., created by Gary Usher - one the most influential producers of that time.

2) The second is a German neoclassic band.

3) The third is a progressive rock band from Norway.

1) Sagittarius was a late-60s studio group devised by producer and songwriter Gary Usher. Usher had been involved with music as a songwriter since the early 60s (including writing lyrics for some of Brian Wilson’s earliest songs), and soon branched out into production work. After considerable success as a producer, he eventually became a staff producer for Columbia Records. It was at this position that, during 1967, he found himself producing the pop group Chad & Jeremy. They had played him several songs, which he felt lacked any commercial potential. He had heard a demo around that time for a song called “My World Fell Down” (also recorded by British pop group The Ivy League), and he played it for them, thinking that it was a sure-fire hit. They balked at the idea of covering the song, and Usher felt that, if they weren’t going to record it, he’d do it himself.

So, he brought in the top Los Angeles session musicians, as well as drafting friends such as Beach Boys touring alumni Glen Campbell (who did the lead vocal on the track) and Bruce Johnston for vocals. He finished off the recording by adding a musique concrete bridge.

SexLuthor, they're not nazi, which as a label has essentially been reduced to an insult these days, but I think it's safe to assume that they do have a pretty strong interest in and enthusiasm for traditionalism and European culture. As for the people still whining about the newer Sagittarius having the top artist pic, are you guys serious? If more people actively using lastfm prefer Cornelius Waldner's Sagittarius, too bad, just deal with it. I don't see how it makes any difference to your listening experience. The 60s have been over for a long time now.

Are people still pretending the Gary Usher Sagittarius isn't completely superior to all the other neo-dark-darkwave-neodarkwave folk groups presumptuous enough to usurp the name of the king for themselves from the clear master? [2]

And a final thought for the passing reader who stumbled over the remark 3 below and doesn’t get the context: The most recent Sagittarius album features lyrics by Jewish poet Karl Wolfskehl, specifically his farewell-poem after going into exile after the rise of the third Reich.

Ever since checking out the Sagittarius page at discogs.com I was aware that there are several acts from around the world and different genres that use the name. I had never heard of the 60ies band until reading this page here. It would be best now to argue over who gets the first picture, but rather ask last.fm to provide the same function as discogs.com, where the 60ies band is “Sagittarius (2)” and the neoclassic band is “Sagittarius (3)” (neither of them is “(1)” there! The main Sagittarius at discogs.com is a Swedish rave artist). Regarding the name: The 2 acts may share the same spelling, but not the same pronunciation (Latin pronounced English vs. German). Marcel [Sagittarius / Miel Noir / Fahl]

Yeah, it's great. No need for the artist with overwhelmingly the most plays to appear in the picture, eh, Foot Fetish?
