Biography

Gothenburg, Sweden (1990 – 2001)

Sacramentum was a melodic death/black/thrash metal band from Göteborg, Sweden and was formed in 1990. The band was initially named Tumulus, although shortly before the release of their demo “Sedes Impiorum”, their name was changed to Sacramentum.

Their first official release was the MCD “Finis Malorum”, which was self-financed, recorded in 1994, and re-released one year later (in 1995) by the French label Adipocere Records. Their positively-received MCD was followed in 1996 by their first full-length album “Far Away from the Sun”. This debut album came out to near-unanimously positive reviews and is still regarded as one of the finest melodic black/death metal albums. Their subsequent albums, 1997’s “The Coming Of Chaos” and 1999’s “Thy Black Destiny” focused less on a melodic death/black metal sound and more on a fusion of black, death and thrash metal. Their current status is unclear since little has been heard from them since the “Thy Black Destiny” album, except some live performances in 2001.

Lulz. People still compare Sacramentum and Dissection? Why not just bring Unanimated and Necrophobic to the picture too? Then we can have an even larger-scale war. [3] I say we do it.

there's a very nice interview from 2012 in the reissue. it's interesting, honest, and informative. it's not hype and self absorption like some other bands.

The Somberlain>Far Away From the Sun>Storm of Light's Bane. That's all I have to contribute to this whole Dissection v. Sacramentum debate. Both terrific bands though, neither a clone of the other, but rather parallel evolution.

A clone, copy or whatever; it doesn't really matter to me personally. They made a couple of albums that suits my taste perfectly and that's good enough for me. And I must say that there's something enchanting about their outros, both Far Away from the Sun and Finis Malorum really leaves us with a majestic farewell... But I guess that's just my opinion on the matter.

far away from the sun is more technically proficient but doesn't match up to the somberlain's atmosphere. that is all. i'd pick Heaven's Damnation over Cries From a Restless Soul any day of the week. same with Thorns of Crimson Death over Travel With the Northern Winds, Nights Blood over Moonfog, or Black Horizons over Fog's Kiss, you name it. at the same time we are splitting hairs.
