Biography
There are at least two bands called SFN:
1. SFN is an active power-violence band from Wisconsin. Members also actively involved in a hardcore/fastcore band called Mellow Harsher.
2. SFN was a popular Chesapeake, VA progressive indie rock band which was active for many years. The members of SFN met while attending a private Christian school in Chesapeake, VA with members of Days Difference. They endured much criticism for being in a rock band, which plagued many of the band’s formative years. After completing high school, the band began to progress from an atypical post-hardcore sound to a more progressive and ambient sound, with heavy use of sampling and keyboards. The band also began to let their Christian influence show during this point in the band’s history, revising the meaning of their name from “Something From Nothing” to “Sure Fire Night,” claiming that they were to always be God’s “Sure Fire in the Night”. The re-emergence of their open Christianity, which manifested itself oftentimes in 5-10 minute rants of preaching during live shows by the bands keyboard player, alienated many of their casual fans.
After 2 EPs and nearly 5 years together, the band broke up, forming various other bands of varying levels of success, including Fox Trot Rio, The Tripps, Ekkardia, and InVO.
The band is widely regarded as one of the first successful local bands from Chesapeake, VA. Many bands from Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, such as The Ending Vision and Andover have cited SFN as an early influence. They also received criticism from renowned writer Chuck Klosterman in 2010’s Eating The Dinosaur. Klosterman notes, “Nobody cares about this SFN. There is only room in this world for one SFN. Wisconsin’s SFN is the best SFN. All other SFN’s are little penis-guy poop-bands. Seriously.”
