Biography

Japan (2009 – present)

S/mileage (スマイレージ) is a Japanese pop group under the Hello! Project umbrella. It is entirely made up of Hello! Project Eggs, who were mostly part of the Egg unit しゅごキャラエッグ! as well. The group had its indie debut in June 2009 with the single “aMa no jaku” (ぁまのじゃく).

In February 2010, producer Tsunku announced S/mileage’s challenge for their major debut. By the end of March, they were to collect 10,000 photos of people’s smiles and assemble them on a 2 x 4 meter poster board. Anyone could send in photos through the official website. In April, the announcement was made that the goal was achieved and S/mileage made their major debut in May.

In 2011, to honour the band’s first anniversary, Tsunku announced auditions for new members of S/mileage. On August 14th five members were added to the group as sub-members. Those members were Nakanishi Kana, Kosuga Fuyuka, Tamura Memi, Takeuchi Akari and Katsuta Rina.

On August 24th it was announced that Ogawa Saki would graduate from the group. Her final event was the live event of Uchouten LOVE at Higashi Betsuin Hall on August 27th, 2011.

Soon after the addition of the new sub-members and the graduation of Ogawa Saki, S/mileage announced that sub-member Kosuga Fuyuka would be leaving S/mileage due to severe anemia, and would later on join Hello! Project Eggs after her long recovery. Her return was announced in March 2012.

On October 16, 2011, all the sub-members became official members of S/mileage.

Maeda Yuuka graduated from the group on December 31st 2011 in order to concentrate on studies and prepare for college entrance exams. Maeda concluded with the promotional activities for their single “Please Mini Skirt Post Woman!” which was released on December 28th.
