Ryan Paul & THE ARDENT formed for a one-time gig in June of 2008, but “stuck together and spent the year gently soothing a lucky few who sought to escape the cacophony of American culture circa 2008.” (isroxxor).

Led by Ryan Paul, who had his start in the Minneapolis music scene in 1999 as guitar tech for Jeremy Ylvisaker (Andrew Bird/Alpha Consumer), The ARDENT offers listeners a sincere, songwriting-driven brand of alt/indie rock rooted in Paul’s personal struggles and story. After drfting around the Minneapolis music scene for five years, playing guitar and touring with a variety of local art-rock bands, Paul disappeared completely in 2004. It was later revealed that he had been struggling with severe alcohol/drug addiction, culminating in a near-death breakdown in Buffalo, New York. The event lead not only to Paul’s sobriety, but served to invigorate his musical passion with direction and focus.

Ryan Paul returned to the Minneapolis music scene in 2008 a different character. Audiences were treated to a new maturity, a sound/sober mind, and brutal honesty coming from the young songwriter. He ushered in a band of veteran Minneapolis musicians (including his father on guitar/mandolin). The slight country twist was different from any that Paul had played in the past. In an interview on KARE11 (Minenapolis), Paul said, “I just shut up and played what came from the heart.”
