Listen to the last three times he sings "the shadowlands" starting at 2:24. The change in sound for the third (2:37) gives me chills every time, has a different resonance.

This has got to be one of the most intense songs I've ever heard, and yet it starts off as so quiet and only builds at the very end. Not to mention that it only uses three chords! It's really something that sticks with you for a long time.

This track is perfect. Everything about it conveys the feeling he's trying to get across from the voicings he chose on the piano to the loping feel of the drums. I love how the first half of the track has a filter on it to make it sound like he's far away. It helps drive home the sense of space conveyed in the sustained piano chords. When the string parts start to come in, the filter is suddenly removed and what seemed like an out-of-focus picture or something partially obscured by a shadow, is suddenly clear as day. The guitar solo is fantastic, again spacious, but playing a lot of great licks that keep with the sustained quality of the rest of the track even though there are more instruments playing. It's the same three chords for 5 minutes, but the way everything is constructed makes it the most beautiful & interesting 3 chords and 5 minutes you can imagine.
