Ryland “Ry” Peter Cooder (born on March 15, 1947) is a guitarist, singer and composer from the United States.
He is known for his slide guitar work, his interest in the American roots music, and for his collaborations with musicians from many countries

Born in Los Angeles, California, Cooder first attracted attention in the 1960s, playing with Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, after previously having worked with Taj Mahal in The Rising Sons.

He was a guest session guitarist on various recording sessions with The Rolling Stones in 1968 and 1969, most notably Cooder’s contributions appear on the Stones’ BEGGARS BANQUET where he shares a prominent credit with pianist, Nicky Hopkins on the back cover of that album. He continued to appear on the suceeding albums, LET IT BLEED, and (most significantly) Sticky Fingers, on which he contributed the haunting slide guitar solo to “

Sister Morphine”. Cooder is reputed to have taught Keith Richards to play in Open G tuning, now a Richards hallmark, as well as to have authored the Open G signature riff of “

Honky Tonk Women”. He was briefly considered to fill the departed Brian Jones’ place in the Rolling Stones, but reportedly Cooder and Keith Richards did not get along very well. For some time after the sessions, Cooder accused Keith Richards of “ripping him off” musically, but now refuses to talk about his experiences with the Stones.

One of my favorite guitar players and producers. I'm still hooked on his earliest music. His trilogy of albums of American roots music and blues are his best. Those albums are Ry Cooder (1970), Into the Purple Valley (1972) and Boomer's Story (1972). His soundtrack to the film the Long Ryders is his finest soundtrack and even tops Paris Texas. Ry recently produced and played on an album of civil rights era songs sung by Mavis Staples. It's a great album for anyone who likes gospel inspired soul music. Ry started off playing slide guitar and mandolin in Taj Mahal Band and the self titled album "Taj Mahal" (1968) on Columbia Records is about the most electrifying album of country blues you'll ever hear.

I read an interview today with one of my heroes, Doug McCombs from Tortoise, where he said his sideproject Brokeback was inspired by Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas soundtrack, so of course I had to check it out. And now I'm a Ry Cooder fan too :)
