A 1970s funk band, best known for launching the career of their lead singer, Chaka Khan. Major hits during their career include “Tell Me Something Good,” “Sweet Thing,” and “Ain’t Nobody
Rufus gained a fan in Stevie Wonder thanks to their cover of his “Maybe Your Baby.” Wonder gave them a new composition, the slowly grinding “Tell Me Something Good,” that he’d written specifically with Khan’s vocal style in mind. Seeing that these days practically every one-hit wonder (not to mention many no-hit wonders) has its own box set, how is it even remotely possible that a decent Rufus career retrospective/compilation has NEVER been released? There was a low-budget, 10-song "Very Best of Rufus" in 1982, and NOTHING since. This is a seminal, important band with a stellar career and an incredible musical legacy. A major, major R&B/pop act of the 70's/early 80's. You'd think somebody in the music industry would think them worthy. Or is Chaka Khan not allowing it to happen? I remember once seeing a Rufus Anthology announced as an upcoming release in Billboard and thinking "finally!"...but that was in the late 80's/early 90's, and it never appeared. WTF????
