Biography
1) Hotly tipped East London duo Royalty return to the airwaves with a tight, muscular sophomore EP called Purple Nights. It will be released on a limited run of 500 purple vinyl and digitally via all major outlets in late November 2011.
The duo burst onto the scene in February with their self titled debut receiving strong support at Radio from Rob Da Bank & Benji B. The track Heat Ray was featured in Gilles Peterson’s All Winners show in April. The EP garnered DJ support from Floating Points, Joy Orbison, Funkineven, Alex Nut, etc etc, and was featured across taste-maker press such as Dazed, Dummy, and Platform.
After a packed out session at Boiler Room, regular appearances at Dalston Superstore and some memorable times on the European festival circuit, the pair took time out to hone and tighten the 80s inspired modern boogie-funk that defined their first EP and push their sound towards something more powerful, confident and personal.
Mastered at Air Studios by Matt Coulton (James Blake, Pearson Sound) and featuring a storming 1980s NYC flavoured house remix by Berlin-based Detroiter Jimmy Edgar, the EP is a strong collection of tracks showing off the range of Royalty’s influences and how they are able to take in this diverse array of sounds and turn it into something cohesive and personal.
2) Royalty was a funk foursome consisting of the Hakeem sisters and brother who recorded in the 1980s.
3) Royalty is the southwestern MC from the dry arid regions of Arizona. Contrary to popular belief his style does not come from the slums of shaolin. If you are listening to Royalty rap, then you are probably either scratching your head like ” He just said that? ” or laughing yourself half to death.
