the story on rorie
once upon a time at the end of the summer of 1984, this girl was born.
her mother taught her that women could be anything they wanted to be, and to never sacrifice her identity. her father taught her to live in an earnest, thoughtful way, and to work hard in pursuit of what she loved. the playboy interviews with john and yoko taught her to believe in love, and to think globally and act locally.
rorie began teaching herself to play guitar at the age of 13. through her high school years, her songs progressed from angsty two-chord laments about how no one understands, to melodic explorations of human interaction, society and personal independence (and how no one understands). she graduated high school a year early and moved to ohio to live with the woman she loved and learn about supporting herself. she spent two years driving around in ohio and indiana, working at various desk jobs (she had health insurance!), having fun with her cat and her girlfriend, and (much to the chagrin of the adults back on long island) not attending college. no, she still doesn’t regret it.
rorie moved back to new york ready to take on the music scene. she played at every cafe she could find on long island, discovered the bizarre relationship between her most personal dreams and self-marketing, wrote songs about it, started a Woman Who Will Rock Your Socks concert series, made a lot of new friends, and ingested a whole lot of caffeine to keep up.
