Born into a family of professional musicians, Robert Gillies not only received a thorough musical education throughout his early years, but also enjoyed the opportunities and benefits which coming from a musical background offered.
Aged four he began piano lessons and aged nearly eight trumpet lessons began, culminating in studying for his grade eight Associated Board final exams by his fifteenth birthday.

Having considered careers in physics, film and drama during his teenage years, an interesting twist finally led him back into music. When laid low for several weeks of illness in Paris, his only companion a guitar, he took to learning the instrument as a means to passing the time, but it soon became the means to unlocking a hidden passion.
Within a year of taking his first tentative steps in learning to master the instrument, Robert was launched onto a path of singer-songwriter.
His talent recognized enthusiastically on both sides of the Atlantic, he was soon being hailed as the ‘next John Mayer’ by a successful Canadian singer.
With a style that mixes influences and inspirations from such artists as Jason Mraz, Ben Harper and Tommy Emmanuel, Robert has firmly established himself on a path of growth and innovation. Each word written, note played and song sung, sees him moving towards his goal of translating the world he sees and feels, into the universal language of music.
