Biography

Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England, United Kingdom (16 May 1946 – present)

Robert Fripp (born 16 May 1946 in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England, United Kingdom) is a guitarist, composer and a record producer, perhaps best known for being the guitarist for, and only constant member of, the progressive rock band King Crimson. His work, spanning five decades, encompasses a variety of musical styles.

Fripp began playing guitar at the age of eleven. He says he was tone-deaf with no sense of rhythm when he started. His comment on dealing with the obstacle is “Music so wishes to be heard that it sometimes calls on unlikely characters to give it voice”.

Being taught guitar basics by his teacher Don Strike, it was the time when he developed the technique of crosspicking, which would later become a significant technique taught in Guitar Craft.

In 1984, Fripp began using the New Standard Tuning, which would also become the official tuning of Guitar Craft.

Fripp is left-handed, but plays a right-handed guitar.

Fripp’s earliest professional work began in 1967, when he responded to an ad looking for a singing organist for a band being formed by bassist Peter Giles and drummer Michael Giles, despite being neither a singer nor an organist. Though unsuccessful as a live act, Giles, Giles and Fripp did manage to release two singles, as well as an album, The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp.

Following the band’s breakup, Fripp, along with drummer Michael Giles, made plans for the formation of King Crimson in 1968, with Greg Lake, Peter Sinfield and Ian McDonald.

Goddamn, love his works. I have almost everything at my album collection. I don't care about K West, he doesn't mean shit in my life, but why the album covers aren't here? I just play the KC and stuff songs here to show and organize sort of my musical taste and albums that i REAL have. I bought the albums, so please, free the small album covers, I hate the fact that the covers of my favorite albums are blank at my digital music list.

Fripp's complaints about the music industry are legitimate. some of his story is totally insane, such as his struggle with Universal to get them to acknowledge that they *no longer owned the rights* to the King Crimson catalogue and so could they please stop SELLING it (!!), and his justified anger at the miniscule royalties streaming services pay artists. I quite like much of his philosophy, as well. but his general demeanor, on the other hand...

These days, almost all Robert Fripp's related stuff are widely available in many P2P networks, most of them ripped in lossless format including high resolution cover and booklet scans. I really can't understand Fripp's efforts to avoid 300x300 album cover images at last.fm. What is the point ?

@CMBFlor20 -- I am actually inclined to agree with that possibility -- if his constant legal actions and steady stream of online bitching are any indication, then either Fripp or his attorneys or his cronies seem to obsessively keep tabs on his digital presence, even in exceedingly obscure corners of the web. If not every day, then nonetheless pretty regularly. If it were for something grander, one might call it megalomaniacal, but given the petty bullshit he picks fights over, I think it's more the bullying of a spoiled brat. I love the music, but Robert Fripp's behavior is appalling.

Based on his actions, that's not that farfetched, Smek. If he's that upset about his music being on sites like this, who is to say that he doesn't keep close tabs on them?
