Version 3

This is one of two tunes I came up with way back in 1997 to see if I could make my friend at university, Gemma, cry. The other went on to become ‘Leaving’* with Laverne and would eventually morph into ‘Relief’** with Luxembourg. This one however sat and gathered dust, crouching with the spiders under the dresser, unrecorded and all but forgotten.

Years later I woke up after a night out at a club to find my four track all set up on the floor. I played the tape inside and found ‘Postcards’ on there. i have no recollection of recording it whatsoever, which is probably why I’m so fond of it.

I suppose it’s about being a long way from someone, but being reminded of them on a daily basis by third parties. Happy go lucky as ever.

Postcards:

Postcards
and soundbites
keep you
afar

Your voice
recorded
you’re my doll
you’re my star

And i can’t stand seeing you
when you’re miles away

I never knew what i found
‘cause i never had this before
I wanna hide but it’s nothing i can’t do without now
i never knew what i found

So come home
my darling
let’s run
let’s hide

There’s no need
to cry now
let’s step
outside

And i can’t stand seeing you
when you’re miles away

I never knew what i found
‘cause i never had this before
I wanna hide but it’s nothing i can’t do without now
i never knew what i found

I never knew what i found
‘cause i never had this before
I wanna hide but it’s nothing i can’t do without now
i never knew what i found
