The Rippingtons are a contemporary jazz group, often considered Smooth Jazz. Formed in 1986 by guitarist and band leader Russ Freeman (not to be confused with the jazz pianist of the same name), their career has, so far, now spanned more than two decades. In the early to mid ’90s they were more of a jazz/rock instrumental band, but since 1999 they have developed into more Smooth Jazz. Many of their songs have also been played during The Weather Channel’s local forecast segments.

* Russ Freeman — guitars, keyboards, and programming

* Dave Karasony — drums
* Bill Heller — keyboards
* Kim Stone — bass
* Scott Breadman — percussion
* Eric Marienthal — saxophone

Past members have included Jeff Kashiwa, Brandon Fields, David Benoit, Tony Morales, Mark Portmann, Kenny G, and Steve Reid.

    Such a refreshing feeling, sharp as the morning breeze off the South Gulf Coast. I smell the drums of the Islands.

    Kinda sad to see that the top albums here are not actual albums but just greatest hits CDs. My favorite releases are Modern Art, followed by Killimanjaro, and Tourist in Paradise.

    These guys were almost bizarrely perfect up to and including 'Topaz', but after that they seem to have lost a bit of their oomph. "Modern Art" has its moments though! In any case, cheers to the gods of smooth jazz!
