Rip Rig & Panic – Epi Epi Arp Woosh
Biography
Bristol, United Kingdom (1981 – 1983)
Rip Rig + Panic was a post-punk band, founded in Bristol in 1981. It was named after a jazz album of the same name by Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Its members included singer Neneh Cherry, Sean Oliver, Mark Springer, and Gareth Sager and Bruce Smith - the latter two formerly of The Pop Group.
The group strayed from more conventional post-punk, mixing avant-garde elements with jazz and african influenced percussions and sounds. They were led by Cherry’s innovative pop/soul singing style. They also recorded with Don Cherry and Nico (on a BBC radio session).
The band notably made a guest appearance in an episode of the UK sitcom The Young Ones performing their 1982 single
You’re My Kind Of Climate. Springer left Rip Rig and Panic after ‘Attitude’ and released Piano on Illuminated records in 1984, and several brilliant piano albums, mainly on Exit records, later. Rip Rig & Panic became Float Up CP in 1983 and produced the album Kill Me in the Morning. The band dissolved shortly thereafter. Sager formed Head, CC Sager and went solo after that. . Neneh Cherry has a well documented solo carreer. Bruce Smith drummed for PiL and others.
