Every sound Hawley records is heavy with heart. I don't know how, but he manages to combine soul-stirring darkness with uplifting beauty in a way that amplifies no characteristic more than the other, and puts all onus on the listener. The same song can be heard a dozen different ways. Amazing, and with that incredible voice... I don't know how he's not considered a national treasure.
Review of Richard's Manchester Academy show, if anyone would like a read:
I love the new album but there's so much reverb used on the vocals (see Down in the Woods for the prime example) and it bugs me slightly. Other than that, I'm glad to hear something fresh from Mr Hawley.
