REGGAE REGULAR WAS FORMED IN SOUTH LONDON 1977. THE BAND INITIALLY WAS UNNAMED FOR A WHILE,BUT INFLUENCED AND INSPIRED BY THE RHYTHYMS WHICH WERE EMINATING FROM JAMACIA AT THE TIME, THEY BEGAN REHEARSING.OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS THEY WOULD BACK OTHER CURRENT ARTIST ON LIVE SHOWS SUCH AS THE MORWELLS AND 15,16,17, (A WELL KNOWN BRITISH GIRL GROUP AT THE TIME) AS THE BAND DEVELOPED ITS DISTINCTIVE BRITISH REGGAE SOUND THE TASK OF SERIOUS SONG WRITING BEGAN. IN 1977 AT A WELL KNOWN LOCAL COMMUNITY VENUE IN BATTERSEA SOUTH LONDON,THE NOW NAMED “REGGAE REGULAR” PLAYED THE FIRST OF MANY GIGS. PEOPLE TOOK TO THE BANDS SONGS WHICH WERE UNIQUE HEART FELT PRECISE ARRANGEMENTS INCORPERATING DEPTH AND ORIGINALITY PENNED BY GEORGE CLARKE. IN 1978 THEY RECORDED TWO SEMINAL REGGAE SONGS,THE CLASSIC “BLACK STAR LINER” AND “WHERE IS JAH?”. THE BAND WERE INTRODUCED TO A&R MAN CHRIS CRACKNELL AT THE NEWLY FORMED GREENSLEEVES RECORDS IN WEST LONDON. IMPRESSED WITH WHAT HE HEARD, REGGAE REGULAR WAS SIGNED TO THE COMPANY AND THEREAFTER ‘WHERE IS JAH?’ WAS TO BECOME GREENSLEEVES FIRST RELEASE UNDER CATALOUGE NUMBER ‘GRED 001’. THE SINGLE ATTAINED THE POSITION OF NUMBER FOUR IN THE REGGAE CHARTS IN FEBUARY OF 78. THE FOLLOW UP SINGLE “BLACK STAR LINER” CHARTED EVEN HIGHER AT NUMBER ONE! REGGAE IN LATE SEVENTIES BRITAIN WAS BY THIS TIME WAS BEING NOTICED BY THE MAJOR RECORD COMPANIES AS WAS EVIDENT BY THE HIGH PROFILE SIGNING OF BRITISH BANDS LIKE ASWAD AND STEEL PULSE.
