Before emo hit the mainstream, there was a quiet place in Florida where some of the best bands were brewing. Chris Carraba had joined Shai Hulud/Strongarm members to form Further Seems Forever, and The Recess Theory (who had already released a split with Reflector in 1998) were invited to perform on their first release, a split single called From the 27th State, which appeared on Takehold Records in 1999, the same year The Recess Theory dropped their one-and-only album, They Would Walk into the Picture. It was critically acclaimed among the inner circles, but fanfare eluded the band as they watched their friends in FSF blow up thanks to Carraba’s success in Dashboard Confessional. The band went through some slight personnel changes before changing their name to Legends of Rodeo, where they dropkicked their former emo-categorized sound in the ass and became a straight-up rock band, signed to MCA, and released A Thousand Friday Nights in 2002.

John Ralston - vocals, guitar

Nathan Jezek - guitar

Steven Eshelmen - bass

Jeff Snow - drums

This one of the few bands for me that just won't get old. It just hits a nerve somewhere.

I saw John Ralston open for Ben Lee a few years ago as a solo act and he was so surprised when I asked him about RT and LoR (I think he said something like "You actually know about those bands?"). Oh man, I love Recess Theory so hard.

Awesome band. Totally underrated and their live show as fantastic. Legends of Rodeo sucked.
