This and other similar jazz-influenced Raymond Scott pieces were not composed for cartoons. But Warner Bros. Cartoons used them--and to great effect. Had we not grown up with these pieces and associated them with cartoons, they would probably sound pretty strange. Similarly, Scott's electronic masterpieces were used (in the 50s) for TV/Radio ads. But since most of us either never heard the ads or forgot them, they sound extremely innovative and fresh and are categorized as avant-garde/early electronic music. Being embraced by mass-culture is double-edged, I guess. But if you listen to this stuff without thinking about the 'toons, they may reveal themselves to you as strange little gems.

Still depressed about missing the documentary about him at Cinefamily. Hope they'll repeat the evening.

As a habitue of the old News/Cartoon theatres, I'm going to have to poke around Scott's work. The people behind those Loony Tunes cartoons got some serious artists involved.
