What has happened down here, is the wind have changed?
Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain
Rained real hard and rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

BEAUTIFUL. A stunning evocation of the Great Mississippi Flood.

Algenon50 I was thinking of inviting you round to elaborate on you post but I see you are an 85 year old British male so let's agree to agree. Randy is indeed a top chap.

I thought one song was an ironic "homage" to the other, maybe not then! Perhaps he didn't notice, the producers must have though. But as many other 'artists' rework one song for their entire careers maybe we can cut Randy some slack.

Zapp, while I can see what you mean musically, I think lyrically the two songs are miles apart. Sail Away is written in the third person, overtly cynical and using shock tactics; Louisiana is suffused with genuine emotion and the chorus builds an increasing and palpable despair. But he often uses the same basic piano riffs, especially on the Little Criminals album.

It's kind of strange how this song, while very good, is basically the same song as "Sail Away."

Following several months of unusually heavy rain in late 1926/early 1927, the Mississippi River flooded, and devastation on a colossal scale was to follow. Some 27,000 square miles were affected, over 130,000 homes lost, 700,000 people displaced, and over two hundred people died as a direct result. The State of Louisiana was particularly badly hit, and as often happens in the wake of natural disasters, recriminations followed concerning the reaction or apparent apathy of the nation's leaders; the President - Calvin Coolidge - in particular came in for scathing criticism. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=19554

A stunner. It sure sounds elegiac, but, perversely, this might be the most politically potent song on the album. The first storm is the flood, the second is an indifferent, condescending pol. And the chorus is all paranoid accusation ("They're trying to wash us away"), which might come across as paranoia if the strings in the chorus didn't dignify it and the second verse didn't justify it. This really couldn't have been more apposite post-Katrina, though I'm sure it was played for all the wrong reasons.

One of his best? There are plenty perfect Randy Newman songs, and this is one of my favourites.

It's exactly the same as Sail Away! Try singing the lyrics along to it.

sail away? yeah fairly true, but it's still one of those songs that genuinely makes the hair stand up at the back of my neck, as clichéd as that sounds. He's up there easily as one of greatest songwriters ever.
