3 Dec 2005, 16:21 by SkaVankerThere are a lot of sub genres to ska, so when people talk about ska in general I get confused. Here is my understanding of what the different genres mean (please correct me if I’m wrong!)
Ska − this is the main genre to a lot of people, but to me it is mid-'60s popular Jamaican ska like; Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker, Don Drummond, Prince Buster and Skatalites etc. (Jamaican Ska)
Ska Revival, Second Wave − 80s UK SKA like Bad Manners, The English Beat, Madness, The Selecter and The Specials (British Ska)
Third Wave Ska Revival, (Ska-Core) − A more Punchier Ska but not Ska/Punk like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, The Aquabats, Goldfinger (American Ska?)
SKA/Punk − this isn’t really a sub genre of ska, but rather Punk inspired by varying degree too Ska. (Often without a horns section) Operation Ivy, Rancid, Five Iron Frenzy, Voodoo Glow Skulls

23 Oct 2005, 05:29 by nooshieI just realised what a great tool this "journal" thing would be in getting help in thinking up songs for mixtapes:
My friend is trying to finish writing her thesis and of course has turned to making a mixtape instead. We need songs about science/medicine in general (preferably immunology and/or malaria), being sick of things, and writer's block.
(PS It doesn't matter if the lyrics have nothing to do with science, as long as the tracklisting looks good. Of course, bonus points to any songs that actually ARE about science or the horror of having to write a thesis)
So far we have:
"I am a scientist" - The Dandy Warhols
"I think I smell a rat" - The White Stripes
Anything by We Are Scientists
"I Am Over It" - The Dandy Warhols
"Girl, you have no faith in medicine" - The White Stripes
"How much is enough?" - You Am I
"Darwinism and the status quo" - Le Tigre
"Clumsy" - Lazy Susan
"Floating in Blood" - Front End Loader

How's Your Taste in Music?
Here are my results;
Your Taste in Music:
Ska: Medium Influence
80's Alternative: Low Influence
Alternative Rock: Low Influence
Punk: Low Influence
It's not particularly accurate mind.
Now I only ticked 5 bands,
Jimmy Eat World,The Cure,The Hives,Rancid and Reel Big Fish. There were others on the list i'd listen to, but not so much that i'd tick their box...
Anyhow as Keith Barrett might say... It's a bit o' fun
5 Sep 2005, 22:57 by aceholeWhat's this here then? A last.fm 'journal' function? I'm going to give this a try, and if I feel like it, I'll turn it into a regular journal - a blog of my music alone. Maybe then I'll stop boring my friends with talk of bands they couldn't care less about...
This week I've been doing a lot of listening (more in fact than my weekly charts would suggest) to the new From Autumn To Ashes album, Abandon Your Friends. This album was rather hotly-anticipated by yours truly (FATA have been one of my favourite bands since I first properly discovered their previous album The Fiction We Live a year or two back).
It sucks. Well, overall it's not that bad I suppose, but at best it's a severe let-down. They seem to have lost a good portion of both their crushing brutality and their beautiful melodies at once. In a word (well, band name), they are now Funeral for a Friend, only with a (very slightly) different name. Very much a flat emo band…
