It's a metaphor for feeling the loneliness in the vastness of the universe. And, of course, the nagging question where life on earth came from, maybe from outer space (hence the title Spore). It has virtually nothing to do with actual adoption. I'm astonished that someone could take the lyrics literally in the context of this song...

This song was beautiful until I listened to the lyrics, and now it has sort of ruined Ramona Falls for me. :( As someone who can't have kids on her own I'm devastated to hear a phrase like "An adoptee, I never knew my parents." If you've been adopted, your parents are the ones who raise you! So now I know. Even if I adopt, I'll never ever be a parent. Now I'm finding it difficult to even process whether I like the rest of the album. :/
