Streets Of London (4:26)

Cover of The Songs of Ralph McTell

From The Songs of Ralph McTell and 89 other releases

This song is about being homeless in London, and about how the world forgets about the people who are down and out, it just shows how the human race will stereotype the likes of tramps, not wondering, wether or not they have lead fulfilled lives, when actually one of the men in the song, appears to have served his country. Its not that hard to be down and out, especially in this day and age with the economy the way it is at present, and i think Ralph Mc Tell portrays the way of life very well in this song, and has a very soothing subtle tune to go with it. Its a very old song, but non-the less brilliant, well done Ralph x

REMINDS ME OF MY VACATIONS IN LONDON

A bit harsh, Jom, lol... but I agree, Ralph McTell, like Al Stewart and Cat Stevens, is singularly un-influenced by Dylan, I would say. Listen to more of his songs, especially Clown, Michael In The Garden, Kew Gardens, and you'll see how very English he is. If you want somebody influenced by Dylan try Phil Ochs or - in joke - Brokejarafingers.

Seeing as Dylan is American and Ralf is singing about the down and out's in London, I would say yes you are the only one, what's more... The style is totally different.

Great song, but am I the only one hearing a little bit too much of Dylan's influence in it?

I agree the tune and execution are lovely, but surely the lyrics are acidic about the state of London at the time with homeless people starting to come onto the streets - though in those days it was more gentlemen and women of the road. Nowadays, since Thatcher froze half the poor and Cameron tries to finish the job, the song is acutely more relevant than ever (like Barry McGuire's Eve Of Destruction or Phil Ochs' Cops Of The World).

Hope he was not singing about me.... and I think that I know the old girl to whom he refers, heavily rouged and with a trolley in tow.... wonder where she is now??

I've heard a hundred buskers picking their way through this - done it myself - but nothing beats the extraordinary original. But there's much more to Ralph McTell than this song: try Daddy's Here, Mrs Adlam's Angels, Michael In The Garden and many many more...
