Radio Veronica is a Dutch radio station that started out as an offshore radio station that began broadcasting on April 21, 1960.
In 1974 Dutch government passed anti-pirate legislation and announced that the law was to come into effect on September 1. Veronica chose to close down at 6 PM on August 31, 1974.
After 1974 some of Veronica's staff set up the VOO (a Dutch abbreviation for Veronica Broadcasting Organisation) in the hopes of applying for a broadcasting licence. After some bureaucratic obstruction, the VOO was finally granted a licence and was invited to open the new Hilversum 4 radio network on December 28, 1975.
In the eighties, the most popular radio programmes by far, in the Netherlands, were programmes by Radio Veronica.
In 1995, Radio Veronica decided to leave the Dutch public broadcasting system to become an independent commercial radio station.
Nowadays Radio Veronica is an "oldie station" that focuses on music from the eighties and nineties and lately also the 00s.
Most of the greatest and/or well-known radio DJ's in Dutch radio history started out at Radio Veronica in the sixties, seventies and eighties.
