Biography

There have been at least two artists with the name Racer X:

1) U.S. heavy metal band founded in 1985, in Los Angeles, California, by guitarist Paul Gilbert (lead guitarist of the multi platinum-selling hard rock band, Mr. Big (until 1997) and bassist John Alderete (now playing for The Mars Volta as Juan Alderete). The band briefly remained active after Gilbert departed to join Mr. Big, but soon entered a hiatus from the early 90s until a 1999 reunion which spawned three further studio albums in quick succession as well as two live albums before the band once again entered hiatus for the members to pursue other projects.

The band is notable for playing with a strong instrumental prowess and for several ties to Judas Priest (most notably drummer Scott Travis being a member of both bands).

2) A power pop/rock band from New York (U.S.A.) that was the project of The Speedies member Allen Zane. They only recorded one self-titled mini-LP, released on the French label New Rose Records in 1984.

I respect Paul, but his song-writing skills is weaker than his technique, no matter how he tries (comparing Gilbert to Kotzen's stuff - from his early 90-s shred-o-fusion to cool solo r'n'b stuff, Richie much more versatile at musical key and still progressing on). But I'm definitely prefer Racer X rather than Mr. Big. Racer X probably the one and only Gilbert's project, where he reaches the limits of his phrasing. At Mr. Big and his solo albums, I can't feel further motion and progress of his guitar playing (same licks, cliches and varies of rhythm patterns). Racer X is his highest level on all fronts. Gilbert is the king of shred-metal. Done.

People here who only know Scarified or Technical Difficulties should listen to Racer X some more. They made better songs than those 2.

I'm pretty sure they're never getting back together for an album, sadly. As much as I love this band, they were only really relevant in their time + the mediocrity that was "Getting Heavier"

just getting into this band, ridiculously awesome. godly guitar work (obviously) and the rest of the band it's pretty solid too.
