1) Ra is an American rock band, so-named for the the Egyptian sun god. Ra has been making music since the 1990s, but did not evolve into its current form until recording their sophomore album in 2003. The current line-up includes Sahaj Ticotin (vocals, guitar), Skoota Warner (drums), Ben Carroll (guitar), and PJ Farley (bass). Their music is described as “exotic yet familiar, heavy yet funky, direct yet sophisticated, sensual yet soulful, unrelenting yet cathartic.”

The band released their first full-length album entitled From One in October, 2002, containing rerecorded tracks from their demo EP, One, and the two radio singles, Do You Call My Name and Rectifier. In June, 2005, Ra released their second album, Duality, with PJ Farley replacing Sean Corcoran on bass. Due to the band’s financial struggles, stemming largely from their mismanagement by their label, before the album’s release, drummer Skoota Warner departed the band, and did not accompany them on their April 2005 tour. Andy Ryan served as his replacement throughout touring and the band’s third studio album.

I was very disappointed with Critical Mass. Mainly Sahaj's voice. It's lacking the power they had particularly on the record Duality. That was really their best album. Critical Mass just didn't meet the mark. Musically it was still Ra but vocally it was disappointing.

I feel like these guys have almost lost their edge a bit, but made up for it in band maturity. Their songs aren't as driving and soaring on Critical Mass, but their songs have a much better flow to them, better builds, and it just comes across as less impulsive of a release. I like the matured sound, but I kind of miss the overly soaring, overly driving choruses of Black Sun. Still, I think they're a very solid band.

I would say no, and now that I've listened to the album cover to cover at least 5 times. I do like the album overall, but there are some songs that just aren't very good. Whether they tried something a little different, or added things to some songs that just didn't work. Overall just a little disappointing, only because black sun, from one, and duality were altogether great albums. On the other hand, the black sheep album.... wow talk about garbage.

You guys don't think you're being a little brash judging the album after just a day or two? I really didn't like "Black Sun" very much at all (Black Sheep was just a collection of demos) I think this sounds like the best stuff since From One and Duality at least. It's pretty good, I've never ranked Ra as a favorite band or anything but always have liked and respected Sahaj's song-writing skills. There's some creative elements in this record, some different spices. I'd give it like a 7/10, pretty good for an album that I wasn't even aware was coming out until about a month ago.

After listening to the Critical Mass album all the way through I would have to agree with YGT_BCRich. There are some brights spots in this album with some good songs, but there are a fair share of songs I just didn't like too much. Overall not bad, but not great.
