The Empty Cage Quartet consists of four musicians — saxophonist Jason Mears, trumpeter Kris Tiner, percussionist Paul Kikuchi and bassist Ivan Johnson — who have been praised consistently by critics as one of the most powerful and substantial new jazz groups to emerge from the American West Coast.
The Lisbon Improvisation Players is an outlet for saxophonist Rodrigo Amado, whose strong belief in improvisation stems from his long history with his instrument. After picking up the instrument in the early 80's, Amado participated in hundreds of improvisational concerts and dozens of recordings that emphasized the merit the free form style was structured around.
Formed by three musicians from the new improvised music Lisbon scene, RED trio features Rodrigo Pinheiro at the piano, Hernâni Faustino at the doublebass and Gabriel Ferrandini at the drums. The trio was formed in 2007 as a response to a challenge posed by Hernâni Faustino.
Named for the geographic similarity between the American Mid-West and the Netherlands, the Flatlands Collective is a mid-sized ensemble of Chicago-based musicians operating under the leadership of Dutch saxophonist and electronics manipulator Jorrit Dijkstra.
Hilmar (b.1966) first picked up the guitar at the age of six but started studying formally at age eleven. In 1982 he started studying jazz at FIH school of music in Iceland and graduated from there in 1987.
