Hope (5:01)

Cover of Up (CD and DVD)

From Up (CD and DVD) and 1 other release

Leonard Cohen got additional songwriting credits for this, but not because he was actively involved, rather the band felt the song had strong similarities to Cohen’s Suzanne.

yeah "Suzanne" is nearly an identical acoustic slow version of "Hope". Both are amazing songs though. I never made that connection before recently.

well there you go - just learnt that Suzanne (one of my fave songs) is structurally identical to Hope (a song that sort of saved my life) ! Not a great REM fan but this song is stunning ;0

Is it wrong to have discovered this song first and Cohen's later? [2] Probably not, I did too, but not through R.E.M. Wonderful, nonetheless...

@CannedMango: It wasn't inspired by Leonard Cohen's Suzanne. They have said that they noticed the similarity only after they recorded it.

I cliqued with this song so well during the end of middle school. Hell, during my young childhood, I even had a stuffed alligator that I carried with me everywhere.

If you like this sing, listen to Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. It was the inspiration for Hope. (You may notice a close similarity :)
