Biography

Tromsø, Norway (1998 – present)

Röyksopp is an music duo formed in 1998 in Tromsø, Norway and currently based in Bergen, Norway. The band consists of Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge, both being songwriters, producers and remixers. They usually rely on the use of other vocalists for their songs and occasionally they perform the vocal parts. The Norwegian word “røyksopp” means puffball fungus (literally “smoke mushroom”), but the band has stated in interviews that they are actually referring to the mushroom cloud created by atomic bombs.

Brundtland and Berge were schoolmates in their hometown Tromsø, experimenting with electronic instruments in the early 90s and being a part of their city’s techno scene. As they grew up in northern Norway, they listened to local artists like Bel Canto and Biosphere. The band has also expressed their interest in the music of Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Art of Noise, Vangelis, Erik Satie, and Francis Lai. They were members of various electro acts in their youth, such as Alanïa, Drum Island and Aedena Cycle. After recording as part of Aedena Cycle, Berge and Brundtland left the group to form their own band, Röyksopp.

In 8 October 2001, Röyksopp released their debut album Melody A.M. on Wall Of Sound label. This critically acclaimed album reached #1 in Norway charts, #9 in UK Albums Chart, #18 in US Top Electronic Albums. Melody A.M.

Can't seem to get into any of their other material after Melody A.M. It's such a landmark album and I love almost every song on it.

Although there won't be another album, I really hope they continue in the style of T.I.E.

At first i was surprised that Do it Again and Something in My heart are not included in the "main" album. Both being far more superior than maybe half of the songs that got included. But on the third listen something clicked, and all of a sudden it all made sense. All the songs in disk 1 are "playing" in the morbid and macabre context of the Inevitable End. So many allusions to the deathly theme this album seems to be obsessed with. There are the more obvious ones (skulls, monument, save me, running to the sea, coup de grace) and then there are those that give it away quietly (i had this thing, you know i have to go, thank you) This somehow made me appreciate this album from a totally different angle. And while i like it less than the first three, i still love it. My only complaint would be that there's too much singing, and not enough dancing. I miss their powerful instrumentals.
