Bellevue, Seattle WA, United States (1981 – present)

Queensrÿche (pronounced /ˈkwiːnzraɪk/, KWEENZ-ryek) is an American progressive heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Bellevue, Washington. The band has released eleven studio albums and several EPs and DVDs and continues to tour and record.

Queensrÿche has been successful in the progressive scene, having sold over 20 million albums worldwide including over 6 million albums in the United States.

HISTORY:

From The Mob to Queensrÿche (early 1980s)

The foundations for Queensrÿche began in the early 1980s. Guitarist Michael Wilton and drummer Scott Rockenfield were members of a band called Cross+Fire, who covered songs from popular heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Before long Cross+Fire added guitarist Chris DeGarmo and bassist Eddie Jackson to their lineup, and changed their name to The Mob. The Mob, who were without a singer, recruited Geoff Tate to sing for them at a local rock festival. At the time, Tate was already in a band called Babylon. After Babylon broke up Tate performed a few shows with The Mob, but left because he was not interested in performing heavy metal.

In 1981, The Mob put together sufficient funds to record a demo tape. Once again, Tate was enlisted to help. The group recorded four songs - “Queen of the Reich,” “Nightrider,” “Blinded” and “The Lady Wore Black.” The group brought their demo to various labels and were rejected by all of them. Tate also was still committed to staying in his then-current band, Myth.

I just love the eerie, mysterious soundscape of the debut album! I find it similarly haunting to, say, Keeper I by Helloween, Dreamspace by Stratovarius, Fire of Unknown Origin by BÖC, some Grave Digger albums, and nearly anything older from Mercyful Fate/King Diamond... I love when they get this certain darkness out of the speakers if it suits the themes of the album! That said, I don't know if any newer album has this darker sound to it. I bet it's all just impersonal loudness war now. :/

Ultimately, album choices (old, new etc.) are only a matter of taste. Every album reflects the state of mind 'Ryche members had in each era. They never wanted to repeat themselves obviously.... E.g. - EP/The Warning=power metal gems. RFO = Sci-Fi prog, O:M = prog metal milestone, Empire : commercial hard rock, Promised Land : introverted melodic prog, HINTF = alternative rock, Q2K=hard rock..always progressing & changing. True, most 00's QR LP's lack a bit of character, but inspiration is hard to find in every release, especially for 50-yr+ old dudes. Give'em a break folks.. no one forces you to dig the new DtC, you can always ditch that and wait for a new LP :S :D

V Clean and good sounds tend to make an album more generic in my opinion. See any metal album today. No personal soundscape anymore, everything's too clear, heavy, perfect, compressed. Riight... I'm not listening to Promised Land anytime soon though as I have so much to enjoy in their previous godlike works for the rest of my life!

I prefer their earlier stuff and American Soldier over Promised Land but it's still great and far from their worst.

Promised Land overrated? There's no enough rating to judge that masterpiece!

Operation: Mindcrime is the(ir) best album ever. [2] I'll never even listen to post-Empire or Promised Land era albums. I hear some people who generally like "good music" :P really like Promised Land though... Maybe I should give it a listen some time, possibly when I get the urge to listen to 90s-2010s Scorpions ballads! :D

I've listened to the first half of the disk (DtC) enough to say that I don't understand where all the criticism comes from, I like every single track till now.. For me it ins't a disappointment at all.

cmon man you can't base anything on what last FM play or is.their so behind on some stuff or don't have enough money to get every CD on line and even if they do show it as a CD that don't mean they play it. I haven't heard all of Dedicated to Chaos but yeah Queensryche isn't the same band anymore. hell Last FM still doesn't have american solider by them on line.

Still haven't heard the whole DTC album, I'm afraid of what I'll think about it, I like every album they ever made, so this could be the very first disappointment, I'll let you know...
