White Man (4:58)

Cover of A Day At The Races

From A Day At The Races and 10 other releases

“White Man”, a track on Queen 1976 album A Day At The Races, ” was written by guitarist Brian May about the suffering of Native Americans at the hands of European immigrants. Its riff was used for the album intro, similar to the pairing of “Procession and “Father to Son some years before.

This song would be the focal point for a Freddie Mercury vocal solo on the subsequent tour for the album, and would serve as both a Mercury vocal solo spot and a Brian May guitar solo spot on the 1977-78 News of the World tour. The song is one of Queen’s heaviest works, thematically and musically.

Freddie Mercury Interview, November 1976, Kenny Everett Radio Show:

Kenny Everett: “Cor! How did you manage to get such a loud noise on one record?”

Freddie Mercury: “I don’t know, it’s down to Mike Stone, our engineer. We’re very bad in the studio for that actually, the poor engineer has to really suffer because we really want as much level as possible. We keep pushing the phasers up and he keeps looking at the meters and going, ‘Oh it’ll never cut’. Then we give him the added task of going over to New York or wherever and saying, ‘Make sure that cuts as loud as possible’.”

You really must be stupid to not understand meaning of this song. And not admire it.

Riff is heavily kickarse, but the lyrics... eh. One man's brilliance is my naive, anvilicious, annoyingly preachy gee-we-sure-treated-the-Injuns-like-shit-didn't-we? Good thing the riff's awesome, or this would've tied with Don't Try Suicide for one of the Queen songs I really hate...

A Day At The Races was the first album I ever bought, and it has such nostalgia for me it's hard to be sure how good it actually is, but this song - ! Great, sad lyrics and punishing riff; after The Prophet's Song probably my absolute Queen favourite.
