Biography

q-Department is an ebm-band from Nyköping/Falun/Malmö founded by Rikard Lindell with Khyber Harish Westlund (Jonas Westlund at the time) and Benny Nilsen (Morthond/Morthound, Hazard, Tape Decay, BJNilsen). The band later centered around Khyber.

Khyber, Benny och Lindell founded the band in 1985. for a time they used several monikers but since ‘86 and forth they called themselves q-Department. Lindell left the band early and a few years later founded Statemachine.

The first recording was made by Khyber, Benny and Erik Cronqvist (deRekum Trio, Zebra Pares, Genetic Stress DI-source). Khyber kept the bandname also after Benny left and he has been carrying its banner since.

q-Dept. have beed clearly influenced by Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Depeche Mode and Ministry.
The band has seen several transformations and had small appendices (“”, “d.c”, “Independent state of” etc) to its name to represent the different settings but is generally referred to as only q-Department. The name of course comes from Ian Fleming’s James Bond stories. At the time of migration to Malmö the band used mainly the name Independent State.

For a time they had some minor national success, touring with Pouppée Fabrikk, participating on compilations and releasing demos. In the mid 1995 they were almost replacement for Nitzer Ebb att Arvikafestivalen, but being the main act being cancelled they weren’t concidered big enough for it and latin ‘hip-hop’ act Infinite Mass took their place.
