Purple Rhinestone Eagle is a 3 piece rock band from Portland, OR. The members are Andrea Genevieve (guitar and vocals), Morgan Ray Denning (bass and backing vocals) and Ashley Spungin (drums, percussion, backing vocals).
The band met and formed in West Philadelphia in the summer of 2005 and quickly gained a dedicated following in the local independent music scene for their powerful performances. On a 2007 spring tour, with the encouragement of their friends and tour mates New Bloods, (Kill Rock Stars) the trio decided to relocate to Portland.
In March 2008 they recorded their self-titled demo with queer rock pioneer Radio Sloan(The Need, Peaches) at her home studio, The Haunted Mansion. In October 2008 they recorded at with Alex Y (The Pool Recording Studio) for a new album, “Amorum Tali” to be released Eolian Records this March 2009.
More than any other question for the band is where they came up with the idea for their name. As bassist Morgan Ray Denning recently explained to the Portland Mercury, “sometimes certain images or phrases need to be recaptured and owned anew, casting aside preconceptions and arbitrary values… why should the eagle be resigned to a cartoonish emblem for capitalism, or rhinestones seen as worthless? The eagle is majestic and fierce, and I’ll take a rhinestone over a diamond any day.”
