• My top 13 of 2008

    27 May 2009, 16:22 by strwrngpurple

Last year was the first year that I had ever really compiled my list of top listens during the year. I did it while I thought blogging was cool (for about 2 months) and I did it right as 2008 was wrapping up in December. Since then my list has changed. 5 months into 2009 and some of my top picks are still in heavy rotation, some are not. I even picked up a few new things early in 09 that really deserve to be on the list. So as I continue to track all of my musical thoughts here, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit my list and make some tweaks. Number 1 and 2 remain the same, everything after is different from what I previously picked.

    1. Innerpartysystem - Innerpartysystem: It's like Depeche Mode, but it's good! While Depeche Mode has made some wonderful albums, their carrer since Exciter has been, well, a little less than exciting. I always thought that was too bad because I really enjoyed the synthpop side of their music. …
  • Best of 2009 through June

    21 May 2009, 21:26 by strwrngpurple

I know, a few days before June comes, but it's close enough. Here is what my favorite stuff has been so far in 2009.

-Isis - Wavering Radiant: This one is a no brainer. People seem to have a love/hate relationship with Isis and even fans of the band can't come to any kind of consensus on what is good Isis and what isn't so good. I love all of their work for very different reasons. Isis is a group that never changes to a great extent. There is no way you can accuse the band of trying to be commercial or toning it down over the course of their career. They are just as heavy no as on Celestial. What they have added to this release is a very spacey feel. This leads to a more "atmospheric" sound that works very, very well. Every track is a keeper and if you are willing to be patient you’ll be treated with on of metal's best bands.

-The Grouch & Eligh - Say G&E!: Every once and a while a hip-hop release comes out of nowhere and becomes one of my favorites. …
  • Swazi top 30

  • 2008 \\ the music.

    2008 \\ the music.

What a year: School leaving examination, driving license (on second attempt albeit the first was better), first own flat (namely in a rooming house only, but the feeling is the same), first semester at college, a shared stage with A Wilhelm Scream (YES!), first semi-professional output of my band (begot next to nothing in terms of success, money and groupies, but it's a good record of course) and a Converge hoody plus an Isis hoody (YES!!!!). While the former happenings are somewhat ok but not life changing in any sense and of course not relevant for the topic this journal seems to deal with, the latter ones do a better job at hinting at the most important thing the year 2008 had to offer for me personally: music.

While 2008 surely was no revolutionary year in music history (despite a new Guns N' Roses record), it's my personal highlight in terms of appreciating and also some kind of understanding today's music in all it's variety and aspirations. …

    1. Statik SelektahStick 2 The Script (199)
While he doesn’t rap, he doesn’t shoutout annoying catchphrases either, and the East-Coast’s DJ Khaled’s soul-driven production, and guestlist, is far superior, starting with To The Top, featuring Cassidy, Saigon, and Termanology. Southern heavyweight Bun B and the lesser known Cory Mo on the east-Asian tinged Get Out The Way, while On The Marquee features soul-ful, 9th Wonder-ish production by Statik and Little Brother on the mic. What makes S2TS excellent is the balance between harder street oriented bangers like For The City (on which Jadakiss shines) and Streets Of MA (featuring a bevy of Boston rappers) and commercial…
