Project-X the band and concept started in 1995 when two friends Torny Gottberg from the EBM/Industrial act EFFECT and Andreas Sandberg from the techno/dance act JSA decided to collaborate on a project together, blending the power from the EBM scene with the club feel from techno. During the summer of 1995 the band worked under very primitive conditions to create the demotape “309 Steps Between”. The name of the demo comes from the exact number of steps it was between Torny and Andreas’ houses. At first the music was never really intended to be “released”, because it was just a one-time thing. However, Torny and Andreas were happy with the results and decided to produce 150 tapes to distribute primarily in record stores. However, a band name still needed to be found. Torny and Andreas labored with many different names before they simply gave up. “Let’s just call the band X for unknown”, Torny said. This way people could make their own names up. Since both members still had their regular bands, they decided to add the name “Project” in front of the x. Project-X was born. The demo tape sold out quickly and recieved excellent reviews. At the same time, Torny and Andreas made the decision to leave their old bands and continue to work together with Project-X , and the same month had their live debut at a local festival. People that lived in the small town were stunned. Music made on machines? All other bands were punk or rock bands. After this, they took a few tracks of the demo and sent it around to some Swedish record labels and some bigger magazines. Swedish label Powerspot, which is a sublabel of Memento Materia, got back to the band with an offer to appear on a compilation with the track “Lies”.
