About this album
The album’s title comes from the lyrics to the song “Lee Van Cleef”, which describe a group of friends watching movies featuring Lee Van Cleef and Clint Eastwood, and driving a yellow Studebaker with a green Naugahyde interior.
BackgroundGreen Naugahyde is the first Primus album to feature drummer Jay Lane alongside perennial bassist/vocalist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry LaLonde. Lane had previously been a member for a brief period in 1988 with Claypool and original guitarist Todd Huth, and has been involved with a number of Claypool’s side projects, such as The Holy Mackerel, The Les Claypool Frog Brigade, and Sausage, which was itself a reunion of the 1988 Primus lineup.Claypool has stated that ” coming back has just breathed life back into the project. We did some touring, and we decided, “Let’s go make a record,” because we were creating things on the road.”

its alright, but it's more solo claypool than primus. i never really got into claypool's side stuff. his playing is less funk nowadays and more like a circus. he used to have a good balance going on, but after a while the dude let the goofiness overwhelm the jam. theres plenty of cool songs here for sure, but i can't shake the feeling that i'm just hearing one of his outlandish side projects.

I think the mixing on this is fine, sort of a way to say fuck you to all the professional studios who're giving everyone an overproduced overcompressed sound these days. Good for them. [2] Best sounding Primus album since the glorious Seas Of Cheese and Pork Soda.

I play Bass and say that Les could drop a Bass guitar off a building and it smashing on the ground would be better than my best sound.

I love this album, but according to the reviews and comments I had previously read I was expecting more Primus and less Les Claypool in the overall sound. I love this album because I love anything that Les has created with several folks over the last 10 years, but there's little of the 90s sound of Primus. I'd say that Ler is unfortunately less relevant in today's Primus, while Jay Lane is luckily far better than Brain even though Tim Alexander is still unsurpassed, IMHO.

les has changed the tone of his bass... i prefer the old tone. plus there isn't much singing from les, just muffled talking... there are still a few gems in it, may just take a few more listens to hear it how some others do.
