31 Dec 2009, 17:07 by dischord33Being the 31st of December and everything, I figured it was about time I looked back at all the albums I bought/borrowed/downloaded over the course of the past 9 years and 364 days, and picked out my top twenty.
That's a lie. I was only six when we came into the new millenium, and not many six-year-olds listen to Nadja (a search for "drone baby" does not bring up ANY pictures of babies listening to drone, which is too bad).
So what this list really is, is my top twenty albums that were released in the last 9 years and 364 days. Whilst the mainstream has been largely dominated by pop, r'n'b and rap this decade, the was a lot of great music if you bothered to look for it.
How do I judge a great album? Well, there are three kinds of great albums:
a) an album filled with consistantly great songs (Mellow Gold by Beck)
b) an album with many hits and a few misses, where the hits are good enough to make up for the misses, and then some (Destroy all Astromen! by Man or Astro-Man?)
31 Dec 2009, 14:13 by dischord33I didn't have nearly as many albums from 2009 as I thought, so a "top albums of the decade" list will be much easier. But anyway, I picked a winner, and then a runner up, because both belong here.
So yeah, I trust my judgement, and both these albums are pretty amazing.
A Picture Of A Picture - Aidan Baker & thisquietarmy
First, this quote:
Rydude1010 This isn't music. How could anyone say this is music? Music is something you listen to. You can't listen to this. This is a landscape of sound. You can't listen to this, you have to experience it.It's a comment on Youtube of a Sunn O))) video, but I reckon it describes lots of music (especially Aidan Baker's stuff) very well. I picked this album up earlier this month, so it's a late entry, but an amazing album nonetheless. I couldn't really describe it without using a load of poetic words, so take a listen for yourself (it's streamable). …
27 Dec 2008, 18:52 by dancecraz3dYeah, this is going to be a work in progress because I still have to remember which albums came out this year. These are in no particular order, but they are definitely my favorites of this year.
This Town Needs Guns - Animals
A fantastic piece of work. This album is definitely in my top five for the year. Having listened to their self-titled on a whim, I thought it was catchy and fun. Not the best thing I had ever heard, but good. When I heard Animals, I was hooked. I hate to use the term "mathy" to describe music, but I can't help it when it comes to this band. Minus The Bear on speed.
Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head
Scarlett Johansson doing Tom Waits covers? Fucking sing me up.
Ghostlimb - Bearing & Distance
Saw these guys live at DUDEFEST and I was blown away. Fucking awesome hardcore. Has the guitarist from Graf Orlock. Can't say much else about them, but this album rules.
Capsule - Blue

Dear Cuts and Shotgun
I started this account to check out what I think is Cutlikedrugsx’s band (it would be entirely fitting with his character), and I’ve been watching you two and your amusing and incredibly pathetic little spat for awhile now. At first I thought you guys couldn’t possibly be serious. It had to be joke. Maybe you two were the same person pulling some kind of meta-trolling and trying to get other people involved in a fake argument. Then I realized that this is “the internetz lolzorz” and this is pretty much what the internet is for, shear assholery. And porn.
Cuts, I’m not sure if I get you. Half of everything you say makes no sense, you are incredibly self-deprecating, you perpetuate dumb internet memes to exhaustion, and you seem to indulge in irony and sarcasm. I mean what, are you actually gay or are you just saying it to provoke the other douchebags on this site? I don’t think you’re a scenester. In fact, you seem to know your shit. …
17 Dec 2007, 22:15 by evesummernightMy 1,2,3,4 artists have been removed for their lack of interestingness.
So, i skipped to number four...
2. Nation of Ulysses (who i'm listening to now)
3. Drive Like Jehu (who as i'm posting this, am listening to)
4. Shellac(back to Chicago)
5. June of 44 (I think i can see where i'm heading now)
6. Don Caballero
7. Faraquet(So underrated. Cut Self Not was a supreme track)
8.Burning Airlines(back to Jawbox, ish, without bill barbot)
9. Channels (at this point i realized i was cheating, and wasn't picking the first band on the list of similar artists)
10. Medications (so far everything is basically DC post-hardcore with mathy influences, i've got 3 of the 4 j. robbins bands, both faraquet bands, the major players in math rock, sans slint)
11. French Toast (what type of name is that for a band?! ex-NOU, go figure)
12. Fugazi (this is where it hurts)
13. The Evens (maybe not, Amy Farina? any relation to Geoff Farina?)

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php
My eclectic score is currently
The 90 related artists for my profile are Alexisonfire, Amon Amarth, Antioch Arrow, Arch Enemy, At the Drive-In (2), Atreyu, Bane, Black Flag (2), Cannibal Corpse, Casey Jones, Children of Bodom, Circle Takes the Square, City of Caterpillar, Clikatat Ikatowi (2), Cursive, Dark Tranquillity, Death Cab for Cutie, Destroyer, DragonForce, Dream Evil, Explosions in the Sky, Finch, Foxhole, Frog Eyes, Funeral for a Friend, God Is an Astronaut, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Heroin (2), Hot Cross, Hüsker Dü…

5 Aug 2007, 23:04 by GodCalledInSickFor some reason when I'm drinking at times I love to listen to hardcore or screamo or something like that. To that effect I made this power hour. While sometimes you might find yourself saying "Dude, this is not hardcore/screamo/grind/whatever," overall it fits I'd say. Screaming, breakdowns, odd time signatures, and a couple of classics thrown in for good measure; it's all here at some point folks. If anyone wants an upload of it just post a comment on the end of this blog or in my Shoutbox.
1. Boy Sets Fire – After the Eulogy
2. Hot Cross – Better a Corpse Than A Nun
3. Kill Your Idols – Chesterfield King and Propagandhi
4. Modern Life Is War – DEADRAMONES
5. Lifetime – Daneurysm
6. Raised Fist – Get This Right!
7. Good Riddance – Judas and the Morning After Pill
8. La quiete – Lettere Che Avevo
9. Give Up The Ghost – Love American
10. Ultra Dolphins – Matthew O’Connor
11. Nakatomi Plaza – Meanwhile In Greenpoint
12. Heroin – Moving Parts
13. Kid Dynamite – News At 11
