Sometimes when you're listening to music (and especially when you're tagging bands so you can listen to your favourite music on last.fm radio later, for example nz music
), you become aware that the band you really love actually also exists as a Finnish death metal group, or some nondescript British MOR act best forgotten. Well, Pony Club
are one such band with at least two incarnations. I'm not sure who their alter ego are, but they seem to be a moderately successful outfit who nevertheless play rather nondescript music which I'm no big fan of.
The Pony Club I like -- and we must make the clear distinction -- are from Wellington, NZ, and are resolutely lo-fi in aesthetic. It probably helps in that regard that they're a project of Bryce Galloway (who also performs as Wendy House
and Mr Pudding
among others), fine arts student and publisher of many a Wellington zine. He also used to work at Aro St Video Shop, my local back then, which is where I've seen him.
