About this album

The Spring of Alchemy and Amory 7” starts off with Colleen and “Up All Night”, a pensive, surprisingly straight-ahead strummer, with the Polka’s signature harmonizing in all the right spots, especially the honey-soaked heartache of the chorus. Track 2 brings us Onyx’s off-kilter charmer “Left Alone”, riding on the same downy breeze that seemingly blesses every Polka track. A tinny ukulele follows Onyx’s hopscotch voice through peaks and valleys of mystical gypsy opera mixed with grade school musical. Shakers, bells, and backgrounds call up an air of lingering ghosts and macaroni art informing every line. Colleen again leads off side two with “Tin Bees”, a folk-pop classic in the waiting if I ever heard one. Reminiscent of the Cave Singers wearing lady dresses or a humbler Feist, these “Bees” will bounce around in your head until all you can do is spit them out by singing. Onyx finishes up the foursome with “Vertigo”, a swirling, harp-inflected affair that was written to play in large, reverberating churches or chapels. It’s definitely not hard to imagine angels looking down at you as the record floats toward conclusion.
