About this album

POLA is a downbeat electronica group fronted by an Italian named Tazio Iacobacci. Upon first listen, I was struck by how much they sounded like the Postal Service: there is the steady crunch of the drum machine, slight experimentalism and raspy voice. Yet to call this derivative wouldn’t be correct, this sounds more like a second album than anything else. But POLA adds more lush sounds to the songs tinged with a childlike wonder, with clips of people talking about various things, all chosen specifically to endow the listener with a smile.

When I listen to POLA, it is like my ears are eating warm chocolate chip cookies. Honestly. And all of this happening inside of my ears, yet the most amazing part is that this feeling is sustained throughout the entirety of the album. There are a few stutters where my trance is broken momentarily, but the whole is much greater the parts. All of the songs share many instruments and sounds, yet the subtle differences between each make for a delightful experience. There’s Isn’t Easy, a drifting lullaby of sorts that is filled with lush, moody waves of reverberation that echoes around, teasing you to fall asleep to the ambient sounds. Then there’s Black, a slightly dark tune that drifts into synthesizer kitsch territory at the beginning, but which is slowly enveloped by the droning melodies and husky voice that dominates the other tracks. This cut is by far my favorite, standing out with a more pronounced structure and prominent instrument experimentation. And this is essentially the entire album: a mixture of digitized beeps, drum machine loops, droning synthesizer, and a husky male voice that is more whisper than singing.

There's a mistake in this page. The "s/t" album is by Ionik Records and not Robotpet.
