“Song to Say Goodbye” is the second single from Placebo’s sixth studio album Meds. It was produced by Dimitri Tikovoi. As “Because I Want You” was only released in the United Kingdom, “Song to Say Goodbye” is considered the first single from Meds. The song develops around some piano notes that repeat throughout it. It is quite sentimental due to the power of its lyrics.
It is a song that refers to drug addiction, specifically heroin. It contains a phrase of Neil Young’s: “The needle and the damage done”.
There is a live version available of the song on the live EP Live at La Cigale.
The original video portrays an addicted father that his son (played by Field Cate) tries to save. Some interpret this video as a role-reversal between father and son.

Everything just falls in place perfectly. Lyrics, music, timing, emotion, everything is perfect. Add the music video to that, especially the extended 9-minute version, which may very well be one of the best music videos of all time, and you've got everything that needs to be there to be considered a masterpiece.
