About this album

The Dark Side of the Moon (titled Dark Side of the Moon in the 1993 CD edition) is a concept album by the British art rock band Pink Floyd. It was released on March 17, 1973 in the U.S. and March 24, 1973 in the UK.

The Dark Side of the Moon builds upon previous experimentation Pink Floyd had done, especially on their album Meddle. Its themes include old age, conflict and insanity; the latter possibly inspired by the deteriorating mental state of their former band leader Syd Barrett. The album is notable for its use of special effects and conceptual, philosophical lyrics, as found in much of Pink Floyd’s work.

The band’s most successful release, The Dark Side of the Moon spent 741 consecutive weeks (14 years) on the USA-based Billboard 200 album chart, the longest duration of any album in history. It is one of three albums tied for the claim of second highest selling album globally of all time, selling forty million or more units. In addition to its commercial success, The Dark Side of the Moon is often considered to be the group’s defining work, and is still frequently ranked by music critics as one of the greatest and most influential albums of all time.

This is an album that takes a while to set in, much like any complex work of art. After listening to it many times, you finally realize it's one of, if not the, greatest album of all time.

@VerbalAbuser Troll alert. If you don't like this progressive rock band, then simply hit the red "x" button in a corner of your web browser and don't come back here ever again.

A timeless classic. If I was sent to a desolate island with just a single album to listen to for the rest of my life, the Dark Side Of The Moon would definitely be on my short list. I never seem to grow tired of this album.

@VerbalAbuser that's like saying everyone who dislikes Justin Bieber secretly likes him but feels like they're not supposed to.

It's amazing to hear something so electronic having it been released in the early 70's

@VerbalAbuser That's kind of a silly argument, I think, and one that's possibly pretentious and certainly a bit arrogant. Basically because you don't like the band and the album very much, you believe that the people who do are mostly "pretending" to like it? It's possible that some small number of people claims to like the album to fit in, but I think it's far more likely that the majority of the people who praise DSotM simply love it. Pink Floyd is a very popular band with a large number of die-hard fans willing to buy multiple issues and box sets of the group's core discography in addition to all the rarities and obscurities that get released. Additionally, DSotM is an album that toes the line perfectly between being a unique work and an accessible one, so it appeals both to the die-hards and the casual fans who've bought it in droves in the 40 years since its release.

i don't think most people who worship this album do legitimately love it and enjoy it . i think they think they should love this album and praise it as if it was a gift from the gods of music to avoid being called "music noob" or "bad taste" . personally i find this album and pink floyd in general very meeeeeeh

This was the first CD I ever bought as a kid. In middle school it was my favorite album and I thought that that Time was the greatest song ever written. Now I think it's overrated and not even among my favorite Floyd albums. But I can see why it's such an enduring classic.
