In his past lives, PIG was Lord Raymond Watts, known variously as Raymond Scaballero in Foetus, an icy addition to Psychic TV, a savage PA destroyer in Einstürzende Neubauten, and a founding catalyst of KMFDM. Watts began his arrest record in London where he was most likely pissed off about something and doing sound manipulations, loops and live sound for Psychic TV. He soon crashed into Einstürzende Neubauten (probably in a strip bar) and escaped the smug complacency of the English music scene by moving to Hamburg, Germany and setting up his Building Site studio in a bunker of munitions factory, where he invited in artists including Sprung aus den Wolken, Die Haut, and christiane f. In his pursuit of a cutting edge music scene he sought out like-minded souls to create terrorism instead of tonality. Playing on European/American Neubauten tours, he quickly earned a reputation for destroying PA systems — the security guards sent by the PA companies to protect the gear were not amused. Between their security thugs and ones hired by Watts to protect him from them, most nights ended up bloody, tense and occasionally on fire.

While collaborating with Neubauten’s “gritter” twins: Blixa Bargeld and FM Einheit, Watts lived in the red light district next to a brothel, in amongst the sleaze of the Hamburg docks.

I must say that it was the metal-y-ness of some of his later works what attracted me to Pig in the first place. And it took me some time to get used to the more jazzy sound on The Swining.. and earlier albums. I now love both equally. For me it is in fact one of the strong things of Watts, the way he makes music that seems to fit my every mood. But I guess to each his taste. I love Vitriol, Vice and Virtue and Arbor Vitate from Pigmata

Yeah same here, The Swining and Praise the Lard are truly glorious, but I thoroughly love the debut album as well, even Hildenlinde, which in all its silliness is a perfect example of the playfullness that is thoroughly missing in the Pig sound since the mid-90s. I agree GAM was weak too, I guess I tend to give it a bit more credit since at least Salambo provided that old loungey Pig sound right at the beginning (thereby having jumped out at me more from my first impressions of the album years ago) whilst Pigmata only shows it on On The Slaughterfront, relegated right to the end. Don't get me wrong, I do like Pig's metal stuff, Watts is a great musician, but it just comes across as shallower and overpowered by guitars compared to what he used to make.

I almost agree with you completely. I love "Serial Killer Thriller" but I never understood why Sinsation was so highly praised. I don't think Pigmata is his weakest release though. I've always felt it was Genuine American Monster. I like the tracks "Vitriol Vice & Virtue" and "Situation" from Pigmata. The Swining & Praise the Lard are my favorites.

Early Pig certainly sounds like Foetus, in fact Foetus' own 'Di-1-9026', sounds so much like Pig (especially the chorus) it's scary. It's a shame that a Pig Vs Foetus CD has never been done (I know Watts plays on one of the live albums and that Steroid Maximus album) - but the world, or at least I am, is crying out for the two to properly come together! Anyway, I think Pig's been a bit stale for the last decade and a half. The early stuff is masterful - jazzy, sexy, sleazy, perverse, fun and sinister all wrapped up in one made collection of crooned & bellowed lunacy, with The Swining probably being his finest release. I thought Sinsation was generic industrial metal and a major disappointment (though I love the title track) and everything since has just been of a weaker calibur to the early albums. I thought Pigmata/Pigmartyr was his absolute weakest and well-below Pig's high standards.. and too metal. I hope Watts gets his jazz back because Pig isn't as good when it goes metal.
