Biography

Pholas Dactylus is one of the many interesting Italian one shot bands. Their single album Concerto delle Menti was released in 1973. They have a dark and ominous sound, rather reminiscent of the first tracks on Banco’s masterpiece “Darwin”. The album conists of one 50 minute composition with complex musical structures, time changes, etc. The album starts with a two minute spoken intro before the music sets in. About halfway through the composition, there is a short, but interesting part with a free rock/Krautrock feel to it. What puts some people off are the declamatory vocals, but I think they add to the already dramatic atmosphere on the album. Other musical pointers could be Gentle Giant, ELP (keyboards, especially hammond), Cherry Five, and Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno. A fantastic album that seems somewhat neglected among all the other great albums from Italy in the 70s.

Definitely one of the most unique bands in the RPI scene. They're sort of an acquired taste, though, not as easily accessible as some others.
