Harvey Philip Spector (born December 26, 1940) is an American record producer and songwriter. In later years, he gained infamy as the subject of a murder conviction.

The originator of the production technique, Spector was a pioneer of the 1960s girl group sound (The Ronettes and The Crystals a.o.) and produced over twenty-five Top 40 hits between 1960 and 1965 alone. After this initial success, Spector later worked with artists including Ike and Tina Turner, John Lennon, George Harrison, and the Ramones with similar acclaim.

He produced The Beatles’ Academy Award-winning album Let It Be, and the Grammy Award-winning Concert for Bangladesh by former Beatle George Harrison. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer. The 1965 song You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’, produced and co-written by Spector for The Righteous Brothers, is listed by BMI as the song with the most U.S. airplay in the 20th century.

The 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson in his Alhambra, California home led to his being charged with murder in the second degree. After a 2007 mistrial, he was convicted in 2009 and given a prison sentence of 19 years to life.

Every time I listen to a Spector produced album I end up fantasizing how much better it would've been if the band just self-produced it.

Spector was the champion of commercial overproduction and a vicious enemy of subtlety, intimacy and immediacy. Therefore one of the worst producers ever, who's done much more damage to music than good. His "wall of sound" was just a way of making music listenable on shitty speakers (such as jukeboxes and early home stereos), so that the masses would buy records. He was a pro craftsman, not an artist, whose trade was to turn music into a glossy consumer product.

I've read every interview, both court case notes, and every biography on the man. I've come to the conclusion that he is eccentric, but NOT a murderer. Don't judge him until you look at all the facts.

I once told him I loved his music and he was so overwhelmed that in a fit of nerves he accidentally shot me in the face. Shit happens, right?

"When I got to California, Phil Spector had a real reputation for doing his 'walls with sound.' I just looked at it like, 'Walls with sound?' It's just padding the payroll." - Meet the frankly legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr, better known to the music world as Dr. John:

People actually have their music tagged as "phil spector". Honestly, I'm not surprised.

Bastard1 is talking out of his arse. If his theory is correct, then I wouldn't have Be My Baby, A Fine Fine Boy, Da Doo Ron Ron, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Spanish Harlem, Let It Be & He's a Rebel stuck in my head so consistently.

Nope, the wall of sound is a fucking crutch for substandard songs that need production to save them.
