I know this is a heaps mainstream hit that's (probably) played to death on the radio (thankfully I don't listen to it). But I absolutely love this song, I think the songwriting is exceptional, the lyrics are quality (cheesy but symbolically potent, at least enough so for me) and absolutely STELLAR production. Seriously, every little sound in this track can be heard clear as day. And I just love that harmony that comes in when he says "it's just another day for you... you and me in paradise" and there's like this "la la la" and these real big chords... fuck it's an awesome pop song. Also really dig "Easy Lover"!
I feel ashamed simply listening to this. Homelessness is such a huge problem all over the world. Sleeping on a subway bench underground. I wish I could do something but I can't even provide for myself. Learned helplessness.
Thanks phil collins for this song. I found myself homeless for 3 months from jan. - april in Minnesota, years after you sang this song.
When you create a memorable song like this. It tends to remind people that even in paradise people struggle to stay afloat, loosing their grasp on their hold of the societal dream of prosperity.
This song reminds us that we need to help each other in times of hardship. For most of us wind up there at some point in their lives.
